Pancreas Transplant
Offering safe options & guided care
When diabetes severely impacts a person's quality of life and existing medical treatments are no longer effective, a pancreas transplant may offer a promising solution.
A pancreas transplant is available to some people with Type I or Type II diabetes. The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) dictates the criteria for pancreas patients. A pancreas transplant requires a functioning kidney. Some people receive a kidney and a pancreas at the same time, some a pancreas after a kidney transplant, and some only need a pancreas.
Typically, the minimum requirement for pancreas transplant include:
- Diagnosis of diabetes requiring insulin
- Severe pancreatic dysfunction
- Non-smoker status
- Generally limited to those under age 50
- Must allow blood transfusions
Our staff will carefully evaluate you and your unique situation to determine if a combined kidney-pancreas transplant or a pancreas only transplant is right for you. In some cases, transplant is not an option as the risks are too high.
