How does robotic-assisted surgery work?

The da Vinci® robotic surgical system is equipped with robotic limbs that can perform steady, precise movements that human hands can’t match. These limbs are also equipped with tools that can be inserted into the body without making the larger incisions that human hands would require. The robotic limbs are controlled by a trained surgeon.  Additionally, the da Vinci® robotic system is equipped with small cameras that allow the surgeon to view the operation in real-time from a nearby monitor.
