Substance Use Resources

Why Substance Use Treatment Matters

As part of your liver or kidney transplant evaluation, the Transplant Committee conducts assessments to identify any current or past substance use concerns.

Based on your evaluation, treatment may be recommended or required as part of your transplant care plan.

Our goal is to support a healthy lifestyle before and after transplant and improve your chances of a successful long-term outcome.

Understanding Substance Use Disorders

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a chronic medical condition—not a personal failing.

Like diabetes or high blood pressure, substance use disorders require ongoing management and treatment.

Factors that may contribute include:

  • Genetics and family history
  • Environmental influences
  • Mental health conditions
  • Stress and trauma
  • Long-term changes in brain chemistry caused by substance use

With proper treatment and support, recovery is possible.

Treatment Options

Different levels of care are available depending on individual needs.

  • Detoxification: Medically supervised withdrawal from drugs or alcohol to safely manage symptoms and prepare for treatment.
  • Inpatient Treatment: 24-hour care in a hospital or residential setting that may include detoxification, counseling, and rehabilitation services.
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP): Structured treatment with scheduled counseling and therapy sessions while living at home.
  • Individual Counseling: One-on-one support from licensed professionals such as:
    • Psychologists
    • Counselors
    • Social workers
    • Addiction specialists
  • Recovery Support Groups: Peer-led groups that provide ongoing encouragement, accountability, and community support.
