Understanding the types of hepatitis

Hepatitis is a general term used to describe inflammation of the liver, when inflammation is caused by a virus, it's called viral hepatitis. The most common types of viral hepatitis are A, B, C, D & E.

Non viral hepatitis is liver inflammation that is not caused by a virus, but some other factor such as: alcohol, drugs, metabolic disorders, autoimmune conditions or genetic disorders.

Hepatitis can be acute, meaning it flares up suddenly and then goes away with or without treatment.

Hepatitis can also become chronic, meaning it lasts long-term and often leads to ongoing symptoms and gradual liver damage. If the liver becomes too damaged, a liver transplant may become necessary.
