Organ Donation Goes Beyond Race: Connecting Through Liver Transplant
Every organ transplant performed at The Transplant Institute carries with it many stories; stories of giving, receiving, embracing a new life, and honoring the end of another. Though every story is uniquely different, one common factor is the organ donated has the potential to save someone's life without bias of background or race.
Phyllis Chester is a liver transplant recipient and patient of Dr. Jeffry Weinstein, transplant hepatologist at The Liver Institute. Lula Washington was a kind, well-respected woman with a passion to help others. Lula's love for others was apparent in her decision to be an organ donor. When Lula passed away her liver was donated to Phyllis, ultimately saving Phyllis' life.
It’s been 13 years since Phyllis received her new liver. After her transplant, Phyllis reached out to Lula Washington's family and formed a special relationship. Phyllis has attended family reunions and multiple gatherings. Not only did Phyllis receive a new liver and second chance at life, but she also received a new extended family. Phyllis, Lula, and the Washington family are true testaments of organ donation creating an inimitable connection that goes beyond skin color and backgrounds.
